Spring Sports

As spring is beginning lacrosse sticks are replacing hockey sticks, baseball gloves are replacing hockey gloves and cleats are replacing skates.  While we are all busily counting down the days till we can go back into the rink , we have a large number of players participating in other sports.  Lacrosse has an incredible 18 players spanning 3 different teams; Varsity, JV, and Freshman.  Baseball and track are also well represented.

If you are looking forward to getting outside and supporting these teams you can find their schedules here.

As the season goes on, please post in the comments section and don't be afraid to brag.  If your son had 3 goals in the lacrosse game, or went 2 for 3,  please let us know.

Best of luck to all spring sports teams and please go support the home team!!

Fall Hockey

I know there has been a bit of confusion regarding the fall hockey for any students interested in playing.  First off, please keep in mind that these games and practices are voluntary and no attendance is taken.  Playing or not playing will in no way influence the placement of your son on the high school team this winter.

The numbers look like we will be able to field 3 teams in the fall.  Greg Carter will evaluate all players who will be in the high school next year on Saturday March 28th at 8 PM.  Players who will be in 9th grade should report to this eval.  Teams should breakdown in this manner:

  • Top 14-15 players will play in the Greg Carter Midget League out of Valley Sports
  • The remaining non freshman players will play together in the Dual State League
  • All freshman will play together, also in the Dual State League.
There may need to be some cross rostering between teams to insure we have enough players at each game, we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

Any questions, please leave them here in the comments and we will be happy to answer them.

All Star Selections

The DCL/MVC all star game will be Saturday February 21, 2009 at the Chelmsford Forum.  This year we will be playing with the division 2 all stars, as there are only two DCL division 2 teams.  The game will start at 2:30, I would encourage the kids to be there for 1:30.

I will announce our all stars on the way home from the Westwood Game.

While I am not crazy about recognizing individuals within a team game, the league tells me I must do it.

The selection process is fairly simple.  A coach may not nominate any of his own players, he only has veto power.  Every team is played twice and oftentimes scouted at least that many times (the Lowell coach would like to say hello) and all coaches are familiar with each of the top players of the other teams.  The first wave is very easy, every team has 2-3 very good players.  If there is any room left, and their usually isn't, a coach may then speak up if he feels strongly that a player got overlooked.  At that point all the coaches will debate that player and if he makes the cut he is added to the team.  This process is bound to hurt some players feelings as some players may feel they had a truly spectacular season and the other coaches didn't see it in the collective 28 times they were seen.

If a player is really upset about not making the all star team, please come and see one of the coaches.

Press

As our season has gotten off to a strong start, we are garnering a fair amount of press.  Please remember that the conversations that I have with reporters oftentimes span 15-20 minutes and I have no control of what the reporter is going to put in the story.  If your son had 4 goals and was left out of the story, I am very sorry, it was not intentional.

A recent article that I read talked about how happy I was with the first line, they were providing some much needed depth for us.  While that is great, I am positive I do not talk about the first line providing depth!

The other side of all this press can be an inflated opinion of ourselves, especially given the latest Boston Herald story where we are ranked number one in Div III.  While any recognition is fantastic, this has done nothing other than motivate our opponents even further.  The Tewksbury coach came and watched us play Lowell, when I saw him I asked what he was doing there.  His answer surprised me, "If you guys are the best team in the state in D3 then I better do my homework."

For sure this article is getting hung in locker rooms when we play teams.  We will be getting everyones A game and we need to make sure we are up to the task.  The days of sneaking up on people are long over.

Driving on Hartwell Rd

Please use caution when driving down Hartwell Rd, the road the rink is on.  It is a residential neighborhood and the Bedford Police will be patrolling this area heavily looking for speeders and drivers who are not allowed to drive passengers yet.

First Impressions

Monday December 1, 2008 marks a  new and exciting direction for our hockey team.  We move our entire operation to the new Bedford Edge Sports Center.  A bigger ice surface, glass all around the rink, and brand new facilities are a few of the benefits.

Many people from the rink will be watching to see how we handle ourselves and these first impressions will go a long way in setting our relationship with our new rink owners.  When we enter the building please look for our locker room assignment on the computer screen by the front desk.  Once we enter the rink please head to the assigned locker room, watching your language the whole way, for their will be a lot of little kids about.

On the ice we don't shoot pucks at the lights or the air sock above the benches.  The locker rooms must be left in the condition that they were found.  No spitting in the locker room, no pucks in the locker room and all tape thrown in the provided trash.  If you choose to use the bathroom or shower, please leave the room how you found it.  NO using the shower as a toilet.  We will assign locker room people by the week and their job is to double check the rooms before they leave.

When I approached the rink about ice time, the 3:40 slot was not open.  The rink owners were so upset at how the team that was in that slot treated the rink, they evicted them for us. Everything that is written above was mentioned in my meeting with the owners.  With a little bit of awareness, we can make sure we don't suffer the same fate.

Good Luck with tryouts,

Coach Harrington
